The recent SRA NATIONAL STAGING TEST held at the Singapore Rowing Centre saw a new National Record set on the Ergometer. Click to find out who is the man responsible for this headline.

8 rowers in total took the stage to test their ability challenging the timing marks set for them to qualify for a particular stage. One man rowed his way to a talking point when he broke the National Record when he completed his test on Saturday,26th February 2011. Yeong Wai Mun, rowed a time of 6 mins 42.7 sec to put his name into the record book. Let us find out how he felt after he rowed.

Q: Are you aware that the timing you clocked (6 min 42.7 sec) is now the National record for a 2000m row on an ergometer? WM: Yes.

Q: Did you ever think that you could actually meet the recorded result the at the staging test last Saturday? What were your targeted results?

WM: I was targeting something around 6:40. I have been quite accustom to going on the sliders. There's some difference compared to the stationary erg but not much. Even though it's just the start of the season for me, I'm generally around that time range.

Q: How do you feel about the results?Tell me about how you felt when u see the finish time on the meter?

WM: Considering that it's early in the season, I'm satisfied with the result.

Q: Could you share how you prepared yourself for the test mentally and physically?

WM: I did not take into account this test when I was planning my training as I undergo a separate battery of tests. So this staging test was smack in the middle of a 4 week training block. Like any other test or time trial, I go through my pre-race routine. Everything down to the time I wake up, to the time I eat, to the time I start warming up, I make sure I have it planned out. I treat it like any other race; going through the race plan in my head over and over again.

Q: Finally, any advise for the other rowers who did not make it through the test?
WM: The erg is all about the truth. Whether or not you have done the hard work, you will know it when you look up at the screen in front of you. If you've done the work, it will definitely pay off.

There you go, Wai Mun has given some advise. To the upcoming talent of Singapore, you can learn some lesson from the man himself.
